The story, without giving away the ending

The setting is a Connecticut farm in 1923. Josie Hogan lives with her father, Phil; James Tyrone Jr. is drawn into a difficult encounter with her. O’Neill builds the play around the distance between what people say about themselves and what they can finally admit to another person.

Love, grief and the hope of forgiveness drive the story. The Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site connects Tyrone to the playwright’s brother Jamie and discusses the play alongside Long Day’s Journey into Night. That background offers a useful way into the drama, without needing to read a full plot summary before going.
