How many waymarked walks are there in Ireland?
OpenStreetMap holds 493 waymarked walking routes inside the Republic, from the national ways that cross several counties down to local loops of a couple of kilometres. That is how many the map has, which is not how many exist: a route nobody has drawn is missing.
Why do some distances disagree?
A route has as many as three distances: what its operator publishes, what the map's own distance tag says, and what the drawn line adds up to. The Howth Cliff Path Loop has 7.8 km, 6 km and 7.5 km. Each page shows every figure it has with whose it is, and averages none of them.
Are these routes open?
This site does not know. Closures are published by whoever manages a route, not on the map, and a page here says so rather than implying that no notice means no closure. 1 of the 493 have been checked against their operator so far.
Why is a route broken into pieces?
135 of them come back from the map in more than one piece, which means the ways somebody drew do not meet end to end. The gaps are left as gaps rather than bridged with a straight line: on the ground the route is almost certainly continuous, and the map is what is incomplete.

Routes, names, colours and waymarks are OpenStreetMap relations. Measured distances, whether a line is continuous and every other figure here are this site’s own calculations from those relations, last built on 2026-09-20. Grades, times and published distances appear only where an operator publishes them, and each says who and when.
