The story behind Ormond Castle
Thomas Butler, tenth Earl of Ormond, added the manor in the 1560s beside an older castle on the Suir. The long windows and formal rooms announce a different kind of power from the defensive towers behind them. Royal portraits in plaster connected the household with the Tudor court.

The Long Gallery and surviving decorative interiors are the main reason to go. A guided visit makes the contrast between the manor and its medieval predecessors easier to understand. This is a good counterpoint to Cahir, not a smaller version of it.

Seasonal guided visits
The 2026 season runs from 12 March to 4 November, daily 10:00 to 18:00, with last admission at 17:15. The full adult guided visit is €5; a €3 option covers the exhibition and courtyard only. Access to upper interiors is limited by stairs. Confirm tour availability before travelling.
