Cahir Castle
Cahir, County Tipperary · 200 m from Cahir centre, straight line
For a castle whose island, walls and towers still work as a single defensive system.
This thirteenth-century stronghold occupies rock in the River Suir. The Butlers developed it into a substantial fortress, later attacked by the Earl of Essex in 1599. The water is part of its architecture, not simply a picturesque background.
What you will see
Explore the enclosing walls and keep, then use the audiovisual presentation to put the siege and later alterations in context. From outside, walking around the river edge helps explain the shape of the site. The town centre is beside the castle.

Ormond Castle
Carrick-on-Suir, County Tipperary · 35.3 km from Cahir centre, straight line
For Tudor rooms and decorative plasterwork rather than a battle-ready keep.
Thomas Butler, tenth Earl of Ormond, added the manor in the 1560s beside an older castle on the Suir. The long windows and formal rooms announce a different kind of power from the defensive towers behind them. Royal portraits in plaster connected the household with the Tudor court.
What you will see
The Long Gallery and surviving decorative interiors are the main reason to go. A guided visit makes the contrast between the manor and its medieval predecessors easier to understand. This is a good counterpoint to Cahir, not a smaller version of it.

Lismore Castle Gardens
Lismore, County Waterford · 26.1 km from Cahir centre, straight line
Choose Lismore for gardens, sculpture and a castle backdrop.
The upper garden preserves a formal layout associated with the early seventeenth century. The lower garden developed later and has a looser character. Looking between the two reveals changes in taste as clearly as the architecture of the castle above them.

The public visit is to the gardens and Lismore Castle Arts. It does not include a tour of the private castle interior. Follow the terraces, planting and artworks, using the building as the setting rather than expecting rooms behind every door.

Dungarvan Castle
Dungarvan, County Waterford · 38 km from Cahir centre, straight line
For a harbour-side castle whose later military buildings are part of the story.
The early Anglo-Norman shell keep has an unusual polygonal form. Later barracks changed the enclosure, so the site records several centuries of use rather than one untouched medieval moment. Its position beside the harbour explains why it mattered.
What you will see
Explore the surviving walls and exhibition to understand the shift from fortress to military accommodation. The compact site fits into a walk around Dungarvan. It is a different experience from climbing a tall tower house.
