The story behind Ballyhack Castle
The five-storey tower is usually dated to the fifteenth century and associated with the Knights Hospitaller, although that attribution is not certain. Its chapel and defensive entrance show how religious, domestic and protective uses could share one compact building.
What you will see
In season, the interior gives a close view of tower-house spaces without a large estate around it. The estuary setting is part of the interest. Do not confuse a view from the village with access to the upper rooms.

OPW’s 2026 season ended on 26 August and the site is listed as closed until 2027. Admission is normally free during the visitor season. Steep stairs limit access, and toilets are not listed on site. No new season dates are assumed.
