The story behind Athlone Castle

The castle developed to control the river crossing at Athlone. Later defences and the story of the 1691 siege make it more than a single-period medieval building. Its relationship with the bridge and river remains visible from the town.

What you will see

The visitor centre normally interprets the castle and siege, but redevelopment has suspended that experience. You can still understand the strategic setting from public streets. Do not plan an exhibition visit on the strength of an older tourism listing.
