The story behind Askeaton Castle
The castle occupies a rocky island in the Deel. Developed from an Anglo-Norman stronghold and later associated with the Earls of Desmond, it still has substantial remains of its banqueting hall. The island position explains why this became a centre of power.

View the castle from public areas in the town. The broken walls and river setting are the interest, but a good view is not permission to cross into the monument. Treat it as a short exterior stop rather than the main booked visit of a day.
