The story behind Oranmore Castle
Oranmore's tower stands where land meets Galway Bay. It was a Burke stronghold, later passed to the Blake family, and was restored after Lady Leslie bought it in 1945. Its continuing use as a family home makes it different from the staffed monuments elsewhere in this guide.

The shape of the tower against the inlet is the main reason to include Oranmore in a trip around the bay. The owners also host a limited programme of cultural events and stays. An old exhibition listing is not evidence that the building is open every day.
