The story behind Craggaunowen Castle
The operator dates the MacNamara tower house to about 1550. Around it, the visitor park reconstructs forms of settlement from much earlier Irish history. The crannóg and ringfort are interpretations, so they should not be mistaken for buildings contemporary with the castle.
What you will see
In season, the site combines the tower, outdoor reconstructions and the Brendan boat associated with Tim Severin’s Atlantic voyage. It is a different kind of visit from a furnished mansion, with much of the interest outdoors.
