From Youghal, the strongest castle outings follow two different landscapes: the Blackwater valley inland and the coast towards Dungarvan. Barryscourt adds a tower-house option back towards Cork. The choice is less about collecting castles than deciding between gardens, harbour history and a guided interior.

Lismore Castle Gardens
Lismore, County Waterford · 22.1 km from Youghal centre, straight line
Choose Lismore for gardens, sculpture and a castle backdrop.
The upper garden preserves a formal layout associated with the early seventeenth century. The lower garden developed later and has a looser character. Looking between the two reveals changes in taste as clearly as the architecture of the castle above them.
What you will see
The public visit is to the gardens and Lismore Castle Arts. It does not include a tour of the private castle interior. Follow the terraces, planting and artworks, using the building as the setting rather than expecting rooms behind every door.

The official 2026 season runs from 13 March to 25 October. Confirm daily admission times and the current ticket price with the operator. Free parking is available in the town car park; follow signs on foot to the garden entrance. Dogs are allowed on leads.

Dungarvan Castle
Dungarvan, County Waterford · 22 km from Youghal centre, straight line
For a harbour-side castle whose later military buildings are part of the story.
The early Anglo-Norman shell keep has an unusual polygonal form. Later barracks changed the enclosure, so the site records several centuries of use rather than one untouched medieval moment. Its position beside the harbour explains why it mattered.
What you will see
Explore the surviving walls and exhibition to understand the shift from fortress to military accommodation. The compact site fits into a walk around Dungarvan. It is a different experience from climbing a tall tower house.

Barryscourt Castle
Carrigtwohill, County Cork · 29 km from Youghal centre, straight line
For furnished halls that show how a powerful household occupied a tower.
The Barry family made this stronghold their home in east Cork. Its damaged masonry also records conflict: the tower was partly destroyed during rebellion and later repaired. The restored Main Hall and Great Hall give the interior more domestic detail than an empty ruin.
What you will see
Use the guided visit to understand the relationship between the tower, enclosing bawn and living spaces. Garden descriptions in older listings need care: the herb and knot gardens are closed for renewal during the current season.

OPW publishes a 2026 season ending on 24 September. Hours are 10:00 to 18:00, last admission 17:15. Adult admission is €5. Upper floors are guided only, with a maximum of 13 people per tour. Groups of ten or more should book. Expect stairs; do not assume admission after the season ends.
